The Department of Engineering Mechanics (DEM) was founded in 1959. The department was originated from the former Mechanics Teaching and Research Group established in 1948. Since the establishment of the major of Engineering Mechanics in 1978, a large number of well-trained undergraduates and postgraduates have been cultivated. The department has trained one Member of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, two Leading party and government cadres at the vice-ministerial level, two university presidents, four vice directors/presidents of national scientific and research institutes (including Institute of Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences), two winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, one 973-Plan chief scientist, one National Outstanding scientific and technological Worker, one winner of China Youth Science and Technology Award, and one Model worker in central enterprises. A large number of graduates joined national and international enterprises, design companies, research enterprises, and engineering institutions of higher education, took up engineering design, technological development, scientific research, and teaching occupations, made important contributions for the modernization of China.
The department has one extinguished teaching and scientific research team. At present, the department has 10 Professors, 12 Associate Professors and one Lecturer, including two standing directors of the Mechanics Society of China, one standing director of the Acoustical Society of China, one member of the Mechanics Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, two recipients of the special government allowance of the State Council, three talents with the New Century Excellent Talents Supporting Plan of State Education Ministry, one Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow, six Science and Technology leaders and candidates of Chongqing, one recipient of the Science and Technology Silver Star Award of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army General Logistics Department, one recipient of the Education Award of the Military Academy, one talent with the “Hundred Talent Program” of Chongqing, one Young Top-notch Talent of Chongqing, one talent listed on the first batch of National Boxin Program. Many of these staffs got doctoral degrees from the world-class universities.
The staffs of the Department of Engineering Mechanics (DEM) take charge of the cultivation responsibility of these undergraduates who majored in engineering mechanics and these postgraduates who majored in mechanics. With endeavor of generations of mechanics faculty team, a complete curriculum and cultivation system has been established. Meanwhile, the faculty team has achieved significant results, including one Second-Class Prize of National Teaching Achievement, one Fourth-Class Prize of State Natural Science Award, one Second-Class Prize of Natural Science Award of the Ministry of Education, one Second-Class Prize of Natural Science Award of Chongqing, and etc. On the research aspects, the faculty team has established many characteristic disciplines, such as Multi-field Coupled Material Constitutive Relations, Computational Simulation across Scales, Mechanics under Extreme Environment, Advanced Research Method, Composite Mechanics, and etc. The faculty team has undertaken more than 30 national projects including the Major Instrument Project of the Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), national major and key projects, General Projects of NSFC and Youth Projects of NSFC during the recent five years.
The Department of Engineering Mechanics (DEM) has established a long-term stable relationship of teaching and research cooperation with the world-class universities and research institutions, besides, the Department has established a good interactive relationship with domestic renowned enterprises, which provides students’ many internship opportunities and exchange opportunities at home and abroad.
